Day #0-1 Well actually Day 0 and 1.
Events consisted of flying from Omaha, to Dallas, to Miami, to the Dominican
Republic, eating food, waiting...and waiting some more, going on a scavenger
hunt, riding scary guaguas (mini vans that really should only fit ~10 people
but somehow the Dominicans manage to fit +24 people), walking through
garbage filled streets, visiting a monument, trying some el Presidente (the
national cerveza), becoming familiar with the DR, and going to bed. Read on
for detailed photographs of our adventure. |
| Stephanie, Jason, and I flew from Omaha, to
Dallas/Fort Worth together. Here Stephanie and Jason chill in
Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport...our flight ended up being ~45
minutos delayed... |
| Here we are in Miami. We meet up with
Christen who got there about 1 hour before we did. We decided that we
wanted to have one last good American meal...so we all ate Chinese food.
YUM! (Jason studying up on his espanol) |
| Sarah on the phone in Miami... |
| As time went on our group began to come
together...here Jes and Renae chow down on some good o'l fashioned American
pizza. |
| ...and Jess was there too! |
| From Left to Right...Jes, Julianne (from KU
Med), Renae, Christen, Stephanie, and Beth...on the floor awaiting our
flight to the DR. |
| Sue, a PT from Minnesota, Dominic and Jan, PT
students from Regis University. |
| Joe reading while waiting to leave the
country...I thought this was sort of a cool photo with the guy sitting next
to Joe reading as well. |
| And we arrive!...Instant sauna! After
departing the plane we had to purchase a tourist card ($10), collect our
luggage, and go through customs. Whoohoo! |
| And the group...well most of us...minus Jenny
and Lisa who were delayed in Dallas and missed the flight from Miami. |
| Our first meal in the DR....bread, peanut
butter and jelly, ham, cheese, pineapple, mangos, papayas, and soda (or
pop)...very Dominicani... |
| Me and Steph. |
| This is the cat of the center which our group
has named Mole...due to the large black spot on his head...but Dominic likes
to call him "Gorby." |
| ..."What are you looking at?" |
| Sue, Dr. Goulet, and Susan. |
| A pretty flower. |
| We are told not to drink the water...unless
it was bottled... |
| Self explanatory... |
| DON'T DRINK THE GREEN WATER! |
| The ILAC Center...our new home for the next 4
weeks. |
| Making purses. |
| Jes trying on her new granny panties.
Being pro-active against urge incontinence. |
| Joe...need I say more. |
| Christen and Julianne discussing where to put
the gauze pad...or is Christen fanning herself with the gauze pad? |
| Christen opening her new wound care Christmas
presents...she is extremely excited! |
| Later that day we went out on a scavenger
hunt into Santiago...my group went to visit Hogar Luby (which focuses on
pediatrics with severe developmental disabilities)...This guy was just
chillin' at the entrance with his M-16 assault rifle...so I nonchalantly
took his photo being careful not to antagonize him. |
| Jes and Steph with Samuel. |
| Susan. |
| Jes and Samuel. |
| Julianne and Samuel. |
| Samuel and his "Bling Bling" stuffed animal.
All of the kids at Hogar Luby were extremely excited to see all of us.
Almost all are confined to their cribs throughout the day because there are
not enough people to provide further care. |
| Can't go anywhere without a Mickey D's. |
| Y el Monumento de los Heroes...~300 steps. |
| 291...292...293... |
| Santiago from the Monumento...The city is
within the Cibao Valley. |
| The local Dominicans having a good time and
flying kites. |
